Overview

The time is right to join HNTB!  We are seeking an Entry Level Engineer - Transportation in our New York City office.  This position would be ideal for a December 2017 graduate.

Job Summary

Assists assigned department by performing basic engineering-related tasks including research, development, design and delivery on assigned project(s).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the preparation or modification of reports, plans and designs for projects.
  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

In this role, the Civil Engineer will work under the direction of a Project Engineer or Project Manager in the development of detailed engineering designs for civil/highway projects.  The Engineer will work on a variety of projects pertaining to transportation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Perform civil/roadway design including horizontal and vertical alignment, drainage, traffic signals, signing, lighting and cross sections.
  • Prepare associated calculations, reports and spreadsheets.
  • Work with design teams in all aspects of a given project to develop detailed design documents for construction plans.
  • Conduct criteria research and design per the requirements of each project and various clients such as Departments of Transportation, Cities / Municipalities and private owners.
  • Prepare preliminary / concept studies and reports for corridor selection.
  • Participate in construction administration activities such as RFIs and meetings.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering and construction cost estimates.
  • Occasional travel for project related tasks.

 

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering

Preferred Qualifications/Skills

Qualifications:

  • BS in Civil Engineering is required.
  • EIT certification preferred
  • At least one previous summer design internship on transportation, water, and/or land development projects is preferred.
  • At least a 3.0 GPA is required.
  • One previous summer internship experience with AutoCAD, Geopak and/or Microstation is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.
  • A mindset and commitment to excel professionally.
  • Ability to multi-task and independently prioritize workload while adhering to company guidelines

 

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
